Empowering the Divine Feminine: Celebrating International Women's Day through Yoga
Welcome everyone to my new blog post - a celebration close to the heart – International Women's Day. As a yoga teacher, a woman and a mother, it is an honour to share the wisdom of this ancient practice and reflect on the significance of this empowering day that resonates with the spirit of yoga. Let us embark on a journey through time, exploring the origins of International Women's Day, understanding why we celebrate it, and delving into the profound importance it holds for individuals and society as a whole whilst celebrating the women in our lives, near and far, that have made a difference in our lives.
A Historical Tapestry: Origins of International Women's Day
International Women's Day has roots that run deep, tracing back to the early 20th century when the fight for women's rights gained momentum. The year was 1908 when a group of 15,000 women marched through the streets of New York, demanding better working conditions, shorter working hours, and the right to vote. This march was a pivotal moment that sparked the movement for equality.
Fast forward to 1910, and the International Women's Conference in Copenhagen saw the proposal of an annual International Women's Day.
The idea gained traction, and on March 8 in 1911, millions of women and men across Europe rallied for their rights. Since then, International Women's Day has evolved into a global celebration, honouring the achievements of women and advocating for gender equality.
A Yogi's Perspective: Balancing the Divine Feminine and Masculine Energies
In the realm of yoga, the philosophy goes beyond physical postures. It encompasses a profound understanding of the balance between opposing forces – the Yin and Yang, the Shiva and Shakti.
The Divine Feminine, often symbolised by Shakti, embodies strength, compassion, and nurturing qualities. International Women's Day aligns beautifully with the yogic principles of finding balance within ourselves and our society.
As a woman, I encourage the recognition and celebration of the Divine Feminine energy that resides within each of us. It is a force that empowers, inspires, and nurtures – qualities that are integral to the well-being of individuals and society.
Why We Celebrate: Honouring Achievements, Resilience, and Progress
International Women's Day is a celebration of achievements, resilience, and the progress made in the ongoing journey towards gender equality. It is a day to recognise the trailblazing women who have shattered glass ceilings, challenged norms, and paved the way for future generations.
As a yoga teacher and a woman, I am inspired by the resilience and strength embodied by women on and off the mat. The practice of yoga teaches us that true strength lies in vulnerability, and it is through unity and support that we can overcome challenges. International Women's Day is a testament to the collective strength of women worldwide and a reminder that our journeys are intertwined.
Why It's Important: Fostering Unity and Equality
The importance of International Women's Day extends far beyond a single day of celebration. It serves as a catalyst for conversations around gender equality, highlighting the need for inclusivity, understanding, and support.
In the yogic philosophy, the concept of unity (Yoga) is emphasised. It teaches us that we are all interconnected, and the wellbeing of one is intricately linked to the wellbeing of all. By acknowledging and addressing gender disparities, we move towards creating a harmonious and balanced society where both the Divine Feminine and Masculine energies are revered.
Yoga for Empowerment: Cultivating Inner Strength and Compassion
As someone who teaches yoga daily, I witness the transformative power of yoga in cultivating inner strength and compassion. The practice provides a space for individuals to connect with their true selves, fostering a sense of empowerment and resilience. This empowerment transcends the mat and contributes to a more compassionate and understanding society.
On International Women's Day, let us integrate the principles of yoga into our celebration – embracing the Divine Feminine within ourselves, recognising the achievements of women, and fostering unity to create a world where every individual is valued and respected.
Closing Thoughts: A Celebration of Unity, Love, and Equality
In the spirit of yoga and International Women's Day, let us come together to celebrate the strength, resilience, and achievements of women around the world. As a woman teaching yoga, I am committed to creating a space that honours the Divine Feminine within each individual, cultivating an environment where unity, love, and equality prevail.
May this International Women's Day be a reminder that we are all part of a shared journey towards a more balanced and harmonious world. Let us move forward with compassion, understanding, and a commitment to empowering and uplifting one another.
