Embracing Autumn's Arrival: Yoga and Wellness Tips to Keep Illness at Bay
Autumn has arrived, bringing with it a tapestry of rich, earthy colours and the comforting aroma of fallen leaves. But as the leaves change, so too can our health. The transition from summer to autumn is a prime time for illnesses like colds and flus to creep in. As someone who was recently completed wiped out by strep throat I thought it would be appropriate In this blog post to explore how yoga and wellness practices, along with some natural remedies, can help fortify your immune system and keep illness at arm's length.
Yoga: Your Immune System's Ally
Yoga is not just about flexibility and relaxation; it's a powerful tool for boosting your immunity and overall well-being. Certain yoga poses, when practiced regularly, can help to prevent illnesses and strengthen your body's defenses. Here are my four favourite poses to do when I am ill:
Downward-Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana): This pose promotes healthy blood circulation and drainage of the sinuses. It also strengthens the upper body and helps to clear respiratory passages.
Child's Pose (Balasana): Child's pose is a calming, restorative posture that aids in relaxation and stress reduction. A calm mind supports a healthy immune system.
Bridge Pose (Setu Bandhasana): Bridge pose opens the chest and throat, enhancing respiratory function. It also stimulates the thyroid gland, which plays a crucial role in immune health. Tip! You can also use a block underneath your lower back for supported bridge if you are not up for anything strenuous.
Camel Pose (Ustrasana): This backbend stretches the front of the body, increasing lung capacity and enhancing circulation. It's particularly beneficial for the respiratory system.
Breathwork for Immunity
Pranayama, or yogic breathwork, is a fantastic way to bolster your immune system. Here are a couple of breathwork techniques to try:
Kapalabhati Breath: Also known as the "skull-shining breath," Kapalabhati involves short, rapid exhalations through the nose. This powerful breathwork can clear congestion and invigorate your body.
Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing): This breathwork technique promotes balance in the body. It helps to clear the nasal passages, reduce stress, and enhance lung function.
Wellness Beyond Yoga
Incorporate the following wellness practices into your daily life to further enhance your immunity this autumn:
Cold Showers: I know this can be a hard one to do on a cold morning but a brief cold shower each morning can really boost your circulation and resilience. The shock of cold water can help your body adapt to changing temperatures and strengthen your immune response.
Being Outdoors: Spending time in nature, particularly in the early morning or late afternoon, can expose you to natural light and fresh air, which help regulate your circadian rhythms and support a strong immune system.
Vitamin D: Autumn often means less sunlight. Consider taking vitamin D supplements or increasing your consumption of vitamin D-rich foods, like fatty fish and fortified dairy products.
Mushrooms: Incorporate immune-boosting mushrooms into your diet. Varieties like shiitake, reishi, and maitake have been shown to enhance immune function.
Herbal Teas: Herbal teas like echinacea, ginger, and elderberry can provide immune support and comfort during the colder months. My new favourite at the moment is Defence!
Warm and Nutrient-Rich Diet: Enjoy hearty, nutrient-dense foods like soups, stews, and seasonal vegetables to nourish your body during the autumn season.
My Journey Back to Wellness
So, I recently caught strep throat from my son and I was wiped out for two days. Completely. As I was lying there not being able to get out of bed I was reminded of just how utterly humbling (and boring!) it is to be sick. So, a trip to the doctors was needed and it did help speed up my recovery. I also practised very gentle yoga and did some of my favourite restorative yoga poses and I did extensive breathing practises twice a day. I upped my intake of vitamins and drank a lot of herbal tea and I ate for the body but also for the soul. It was indeed a humbling experience that reaffirmed the importance of taking proactive steps to maintain my health.
While my strep throat was a temporary setback, it reinforced the necessity of self-care and mindfulness.
As the autumn season unfolds, I'm taking proactive measures to keep illness at bay. This includes a renewed commitment to my yoga practice, balanced nutrition, and spending time outdoors. These actions are not just about staying healthy but also about embracing the changing seasons with vitality.
